Model Spotlight: The Maw Ascendant

Some models demand attention. The Maw Ascendant doesn't ask — it takes it. A towering predator of the outer void, the Maw Ascendant is one of VoidHive Forge's most visceral and dynamic sculpts — a creature mid-lunge, all gaping maw and raking talons, frozen at the apex of the kill.

The Sculpt

The Maw Ascendant is built around a single, powerful silhouette: a creature rising, mouth open, every line of its body driving forward. The carapace is layered and angular, designed to catch light dramatically from any angle. Beneath the armour plates, exposed musculature and bioluminescent tissue hint at the raw biological power underneath.

The head is the centrepiece — a multi-part maw assembly with rows of recurved teeth, sensory tendrils, and a crown of chitinous spines that frame the face like a war mask. It is, in every sense, a predator's face.

Scale & Detail

Cast in high-detail grey resin, the Maw Ascendant rewards close inspection. Surface texture shifts from smooth carapace to rough, scaled hide to exposed organic tissue — each zone offering a different painting challenge and a different visual reward. The model arrives in sub-assemblies with clear contact points, making it straightforward to paint before final assembly.

Painting the Maw Ascendant

The open maw is the natural focal point — paint it first and let it drive your colour decisions. A wet, fleshy interior in deep reds and pinks contrasts beautifully against dark exterior chitin. The teeth reward careful edge highlighting; the sensory tendrils are perfect for OSL work in teal or violet.

For the carapace, teal-to-black layering gives a void-born predator feel. Amber or rust tones push it towards a more organic, apex predator aesthetic. Either way, the sculpt carries the paint.

On the Tabletop

The Maw Ascendant is a natural centrepiece for any VoidHive warband — an apex striker that anchors the force visually and narratively. Its dynamic pose reads clearly from across the table, and its scale commands the battlefield without overwhelming it.
