Model Spotlight: The Maw Ascendant — Hunger Given Form
Share
There are bioforms that kill with precision. There are bioforms that kill with psychic terror. And then there is the Maw Ascendant — a creature that kills with pure, overwhelming appetite.
The Maw Ascendant is one of the most visually striking models in the VoidHive Forge range. At 120mm it commands the table with a presence that belies its scale — every surface alive with detail, every angle telling a story of something ancient, ravenous, and utterly without mercy.
Design Philosophy
Where many bioforms in the VoidHive range are defined by their limbs — scythe arms, claw appendages, psychic tendrils — the Maw Ascendant is defined by its mouth. The jaw structure dominates the sculpt, a cavernous maw ringed with layered teeth and framed by a hood of chitin plating that flares outward like a crown of bone.
The body beneath is almost secondary — a delivery mechanism for the hunger above. Muscular, low-slung, built for the final lunge that ends the hunt.
On the Tabletop
The Maw Ascendant works brilliantly as a terror unit, a named predator character, or an objective marker representing a consumed target. Its low profile makes it surprisingly easy to position in tight terrain, while the dramatic jaw structure ensures it’s never lost in a crowd of models.
Painting Highlights
- The interior of the maw is ideal for wet blending — deep red at the throat fading to pale pink at the teeth edges
- The chitin hood responds beautifully to OSL from below, as if lit by the glow of a previous victim
- Tongue and soft tissue details hold washes exceptionally well for fast, effective results
