VOIDHIVE CODEX — ARC 2: THE HARVEST FLEET
Chapter 11 — The Signal
The Ironveil dropped out of transit at Relay Station Keth-7 running on emergency power, her hull scored in three places where the bioforms had held on longer than they should have, her crew of four hundred and eleven reduced to three hundred and eighty-nine.
Admiral Coss had not slept.
She stood at the comm station and composed her report with the careful precision of someone who understood that the words she chose in the next ten minutes would determine how the wider galaxy responded to what was coming. Too much panic and the report would be dismissed as trauma. Too little and the response would be too slow. She needed to be exact. She needed to be believed.
She had watched five ships absorbed.
She had watched the Void Tyrant unmake the Constant Vigil in four seconds.
She had watched the Harvest Fleet move through the engagement zone with the patient efficiency of something that had done this before, many times, in many systems, and had never once been stopped.
She wrote: The threat is not tactical. It is existential. Do not send a fleet. Send everything.
She transmitted it on every frequency she had.
She did not know if it would be enough.
She did not know if anything would be enough.
But somewhere in the dark, at the edge of the relay network, the signal propagated outward — light-speed, unstoppable, carrying its terrible cargo of information toward every inhabited system in range. Toward admiralties and councils and governments that had never heard of Verath-9. Toward people who were, right now, going about their lives in the comfortable certainty that the void between stars was empty.
It was not empty.
It had never been empty.
It had simply been waiting.
The signal reached seventeen systems.
In fourteen of them, it arrived too late.
In three, it arrived in time.
In time to prepare.
In time to be afraid.
Whether fear was enough — that is a question for Arc 3.
[END OF CHAPTER 11]
Next: Chapter 12 — The Reckoning. The arc's climax. The Hive reaches the first inhabited world. What remains of humanity makes its stand.
⬛ CODEX ENTRY — HARVEST FLEET CLASSIFICATION: INTELLIGENCE ASSET
Designation: Admiral Maren Coss — Survivor, Verath-9 Perimeter Engagement
Status: Active
Classification: The Only WarningAdmiral Coss is the only flag officer to have engaged the Harvest Fleet and survived. Her report — transmitted from Relay Station Keth-7 at 0412 station time — is the foundational document of what Fleet Command now calls the Verath Protocol. She has since been promoted, decorated, and largely ignored. She continues to insist that the response is insufficient. She continues to be correct.
