VOIDHIVE CODEX — ARC 2: THE HARVEST FLEET
Chapter 7 — The Silence Between Stars

Fleet Admiral Maren Coss had been in command of the Ironveil for eleven years. She had fought pirates in the Keth Expanse, suppressed a colony uprising on Drevath-4, and once held a blockade line for nineteen days against a force three times her size. She was not, by any reasonable measure, a person who frightened easily.

She was frightened now.

"Status on Verath-9," she said, for the fourth time in an hour.

"No response from the boarding team, Admiral." Lieutenant Prenn kept his voice professionally flat. "Comms are active. We're transmitting. There's just... nothing coming back."

"Biosigns?"

"Eleven. All stable. All stationary." He paused. "They've been stationary for forty minutes."

Coss looked at the station through the forward viewport. It sat in the dark the way it always had — a ring of modules and arrays, lights on, systems running, perfectly intact. The most dangerous thing she'd ever seen was a station that looked fine.

"Pull the second team," she said. "Full hazard protocol. Nobody boards without a tether to this ship."

"Admiral." Prenn's voice changed. "I'm reading new contacts. Multiple. Coming from the station's shadow."

She turned to the tactical display.

The contacts were not ships.

They were not anything she had a classification for.

They were moving in formation — a loose, organic spread, the way a murmuration moves, the way a tide moves — and they were large. Each one large enough to register on the mass sensors. Each one moving with the unhurried certainty of something that had already decided how this ended.

"Battle stations," Coss said quietly.

The Ironveil had never fired its weapons at something alive before.

It was about to.

The Harvest Fleet does not travel.
It grows.
It extends itself from one point of consumption to the next, leaving nothing behind but substrate and silence.
The fleet that came to rescue Verath-9 did not understand this.
They thought they were responding to an incident.
They were becoming one.

[END OF CHAPTER 7]

Next: Chapter 8 — The Brood Carriers. The shapes in the dark resolve. And they are full.

⬛ CODEX ENTRY — HARVEST FLEET CLASSIFICATION: VANGUARD PHENOMENON
Designation: The Advance Shadow
Threat Level: Strategic
First Recorded: Verath-9 Perimeter Engagement

The Harvest Fleet does not announce its approach. It conceals itself in the mass shadow of its own previous conquests, using the debris and substrate of consumed installations as cover. By the time a fleet detects the Advance Shadow, the encirclement is already complete. Fleet Command recommendation: if you can see it, you are already inside it.
