VoidHive Codex — Arc 3, Chapter 18: The Choice

She was the first person ever asked. She thought carefully about what it meant to say yes. She thought carefully about what it meant to say no.
"We can offer you something," the Architect said. "Something we have never offered before."
Vance waited.
"You are different," it said. "Not because you were absorbed — we have absorbed billions. Not because you retained your sense of self — others have, for a time. Because you asked why. Because when you understood the answer, your first question was whether it worked." It paused. "Most minds, when they understand the purpose, either accept it or reject it. You evaluated it. You asked for evidence."
"I was a reconnaissance officer," Vance said. "It's a professional habit."
"Yes. And it is rare. And it is useful." The Architect regarded her. "We are offering you a role. Not absorption — you are already absorbed, that is not reversible. A function. A purpose within the purpose. We need minds that can evaluate. That can ask whether what we are doing is working. That can tell us when we are wrong."
Vance thought about this for a long time.
She thought about the Ardent Threshold, and the nine crew members who had boarded Verath-9 not knowing what they were walking into. She thought about Orel, sitting in the atrium with his empty eyes and his borrowed voice. She thought about Admiral Coss, turning the Ironveil around and coming back to Drevath Prime because someone had to.
She thought about the handprint on the wall.
"If I do this," she said. "If I become — whatever you're offering. Can I talk to them? The ones who were absorbed. The ones who are in the Web."
"Yes."
"Can I tell them what you told me? The purpose. The reason."
"Yes."
"And if they don't accept it? If they reject it, even knowing?"
The Architect was quiet for a long moment.
"Then we will have to reconsider our methods," it said. "That is, in part, why we need you."
Vance looked at the atrium around her. At the substrate blazing with the light of a billion minds. At Orel, sitting in his corner, head tilted, listening to something vast and old and patient. At the observation dome above, and the stars beyond it, and somewhere out there the Ironveil running at full drive toward a galaxy that didn't know yet what was coming.
She thought about what it meant to be the first person ever asked.
"I'll do it," she said. "But I want it on record — whatever record you keep — that I'm doing it under protest. That I think there should have been a better way. That I think you should have asked before you harvested."
"Noted," the Architect said.
"And I want to talk to Coss."
A pause.
"That," the Architect said, "may be possible. In time."
The substrate pulsed around her. The Web breathed. Somewhere in the vast slow chorus of a billion minds, something shifted — a new note, a new voice, a new function taking shape in the architecture of the Hive's distributed consciousness.
Lieutenant Sera Vance, formerly of the Reconnaissance Corvette Ardent Threshold, closed her eyes.
She got to work.
The Hive is an ark.
Vance is its conscience.
The Architects are still learning.
The universe is still ending.
Slowly.
There is still time.

⬛ CODEX ENTRY — ARC 3 CLASSIFICATION: PERSONNEL FILE
Designation: Lieutenant Sera Vance — Advocate, The Web
Status: Active / Reclassified
Function: Conscience of the HiveLieutenant Vance is the first absorbed mind to be offered a functional role within the Architect's preservation project. She accepted under protest, which the Architects have noted as the most promising response they have received in approximately four billion years of operation. Her first act in her new role was to request contact with Admiral Coss. Her second was to begin compiling a list of questions the Architects have not yet answered satisfactorily. The list is long. She is not in a hurry. Neither, for once, is the Hive.
