[RESEARCH LOG — LT. SERA VANCE — DAY 14, ARCHITECT PROJECT]
They answered.
I had almost stopped expecting it. Fourteen days since I asked about the ones who didn't consent, and then this morning Lumen returned with three others I hadn't seen before — older, if that word applies, their light slower and deeper — and they arranged themselves around my space and they showed me.
There were species that refused. The Architects have a record of every one.
Some were left alone. Their worlds are gone now — star death, collision, entropy — and their patterns exist nowhere. The Architects carry the weight of that. I felt it when Lumen showed me: not guilt, exactly, but something heavier. The specific grief of watching something irreplaceable end because it chose to.
Some were harvested anyway.
I asked Lumen which category humanity fell into.
It showed me something I didn't expect: a question mark. An actual, genuine uncertainty. The Architects don't know yet. They are waiting to see what we choose.
That is why I'm here. That is what the Architect Project actually is.
We are not being studied. We are being asked.
