[RESEARCH LOG — LT. SERA VANCE — DAY 21, ARCHITECT PROJECT]
I followed the deep filament.
I know I should have waited for authorisation. I know that. But Lumen was leading and I have learned — slowly, painfully, across twenty-one days of silence and light — that when Lumen leads, you follow, because the Architects do not offer twice.
The station goes deeper than the schematics show. Three levels below my quarters the corridors narrow and the bioluminescence changes — cooler, bluer, the kind of light that exists at the bottom of oceans. The filaments here are thicker than my arm. They pulse in slow unison, and the sound they make is below hearing, felt in the sternum rather than the ears.
Lumen brought me to a chamber.
In the centre of the chamber was a mind.
Not a body. Not a form. A mind — a concentration of Architect consciousness so dense it bent the light around it, a knot of ancient intelligence that had been here, I understood suddenly, before the station was built around it. The station was built for it. The station is a shell. This is what lives inside.
It didn't speak the way Lumen speaks — images and impressions and borrowed metaphors. It spoke in something older. Something that arrived not in my eyes or my ears but somewhere behind them, in the part of the brain that processes meaning before language catches up.
It said: We have been waiting for a species that would ask why.
It said: You are the first in eleven thousand years.
It said: The answer we need from you is not yes or no. It is something harder.
I asked what.
The chamber filled with light so bright I couldn't see, and in the white I felt the weight of eleven thousand years of harvested minds pressing against the edges of the room, and the ancient thing at the centre said:
Tell us if it was worth it.
