VoidHive Codex — Arc 4, Chapter 33: The New Question

[RESEARCH LOG — LT. SERA VANCE — DAY 27, ARCHITECT PROJECT]

It took four days.

I don't know what the Architects were doing in those four days. Processing, maybe. Arguing, possibly — I've started to think they argue the way the Chorus argues, in frequencies below perception, in the slow collision of ancient certainties. Lumen was absent for most of it. The station felt different without it. Quieter in a way that had weight.

On the morning of day twenty-seven, the deep chamber opened without me asking.

I went down.

The ancient mind was there, but it was different — the density of it had changed, the way a room changes when someone has made a decision and the air hasn't caught up yet. The filaments were still. Not dormant. Listening.

I put my hands on the nearest one and waited.

It asked the new question.

Not in light this time. Not in impression or borrowed metaphor. In something that arrived fully formed, as if it had been translated specifically for me, as if the four days had been spent finding the exact words a human lieutenant from a species they'd known for three weeks would understand:

What do you do with what you cannot undo?

I stood there for a long time.

Then I said: That's the one. That's the question you've been trying to ask.

The light in the chamber did something I don't have language for. The closest I can get is: it exhaled.

Eleven thousand years of held breath.
