Something changed.

We felt it the way you feel a change in pressure — not the thing itself, but the shape of the air around it. The ancient mind at the centre shifted, and the shift moved through us like a wave through water, and for the first time in longer than most of us have existed, the Drevath went quiet.

Not silent. Not resolved. Quiet — the specific quiet of people who have been shouting at a locked door and have just heard, for the first time, a sound from the other side.

The question changed.

We had all been living inside the old question for so long we had stopped noticing it — was it worth it, pressing against the edges of everything, the frame around every memory, the weight under every thought. Vel-who-was-Maren had her storm and even she felt it, the way you feel a headache only when it stops.

The new question arrived and it was worse and it was better and it was true in a way the old one never was.

What do you do with what you cannot undo?

The Drevath didn't answer. But they stopped being angry in the way that means there is nothing left to say, and started being angry in the way that means there is finally something worth saying it to. That is a different thing. That is the beginning of something.

Vel-who-was-Maren watched her storm come in from the eastern shelf and she thought: I don't know. I don't know what you do with it. But I think you start by calling it what it is.

The rest of us —

The rest of us felt, for the first time, like data that was being read rather than stored.

It wasn't an answer.

It was better than an answer.

It was the Architects, finally, learning how to grieve.
