[PERSONAL LOG — LT. SERA VANCE — DAY 30, ARCHITECT PROJECT]
Thirty days.
Lumen came back this morning. It found me at breakfast — reconstituted eggs, the same as every morning, the small indignities of deep space unchanged by contact with ancient intelligence — and it arranged itself in the chair across from me and pulsed slowly, and I had the distinct impression it was doing what I was doing, which was sitting quietly with someone after something large had happened.
We didn't communicate. Not formally. We just sat.
I've been thinking about what comes next, and I keep arriving at the same place: there is no clean ending to this. The Architects cannot give back what they took. The Drevath cannot be un-absorbed. The Vel cannot be un-chosen. Eleven thousand years of irreversible decisions sit in the deep chamber like sediment, and no question — however true, however precisely translated — dissolves them.
But grief is not dissolution. Grief is what you do when dissolution isn't available.
And maybe that's enough. Maybe that's what I'm here for — not to be the bridge between humanity and the Architects, but to show them what it looks like when a species sits with what it cannot fix and keeps going anyway. We're very good at that. Humans. We've had practice.
I filed my thirty-day report this morning. Coss will read it tonight.
I didn't include a recommendation this time.
I included a question.
How long do you want me to stay?
Not because I want to leave.
Because I think the Architects need to learn to ask for things, and someone has to go first.
Lumen's light shifted when I sent it. Warm. Slow. The shape I've learned to read as something it took me twenty days to name and I'll spend the rest of my life being glad I did.
Hope.
The station hums beneath my feet.
The Chorus thinks its new thoughts.
And somewhere in the deep chamber, the oldest mind in this part of the galaxy sits with an unanswerable question and, for the first time, does not flinch.
Neither do I.
